Located in San Jose California near the famous ‘Shark Tank’ the HP pavilion, Tee Nee Thai is (was) on the Alameda. More on the ‘was’ in a moment.
Tastes Like Travel found Tee Nee Thai on a recent visit to San Jose, while walking the neighborhood by our hotel, the Arena Hotel. We wanted something different, and as we hadn’t had Thai in quite awhile, it was the choice.
Since we were still on central time, we were hungry early and so had to wait for them to open at 5 p.m. for dinner. Not a problem as we sat in front, in the bistro seats and people-watched.
Inside we found a wonderland of Thai items. Rosewood tables, intricately carved, with warm woven placemats and rich linen napkins. Fresh flowers on the tables, carved goddesses guarding the restaurant (apparently not well), and Thai wood paintings depicting social scenes from the homeland. Most intriguing was a huge panoramic photo of the Thai king on the 50th anniversary of his ascension to the throne, surrounded by dignitaries from around the world. We were surrounded by well- thought interior design, graceful and welcoming.
After a brief discussion with our nervous young waiter, we ordered the Kaprow Seafood and the Green Curry Seafood. I think we were
hungry for seafood! We ordered one steamed rice to split and one roti to sample the Thai bread. The roti came out first with a thin mustardy sauce. The roti was doughy, like not fully cooked, but it was good. Our entrees came out promptly, and what beautiful food it was! The seafood and vegetables were bright and very fresh. The sauces were mouthwatering and wonderful. Everything was delicious.
The management brought us a complimentary dessert, a flan-like custard with a delicate sweet mango sauce in top.
We left and headed for the hockey game, sated but not over-full.
We drove by Tee Nee Thai the next morning and found fire engines and yellow tape marking the boundaries to the restaurant. Apparently there had been an electrical fire overnight and all was lost! We had been some of the last people to dine at Tee Nee. At least for now. Tastes Like Travel sincerely hopes that Tee Nee Thai will rise like a Phoenix and return to preparing their wonderful dishes in a graceful place. We will check on you the next time we visit San Jose!
