There is nothing better than an authentic New Orleans Poboy sandwich. On a recent trip through the Big Easy, Tastes Like Travel stopped for the night to stroll Bourbon Street and to eat some New Orleans food the city is famous for. As we strolled to the East end of Bourbon street where the night life starts to fade we cam upon NOLA Poboys. WE walked in and the adventure began.
The first thing you notice about in NOLA Poboys is the massive chalkboard menu. There are dozens of classic New Orleans style sandwiches as well as appetizers, authentic Boudin, sausages, chicken and seafood. If you like traditional New Orleans style food you will find more than one menu item to please your appetite. Once my eye caught the soft-shell Crab Poboy my mind was made up. Since the trophy wife and I had already downed a dozen oysters and a couple martinis at Remoulades, we decided to split the poor boy. Attached to the menu was a homemade sign warning the diner that these poor boys are spicy. There were a couple of options to the standard spicy poor boy one being Yankee, which is mild, and the other one was cursing Murray. The cursing Murray version was very spicy and warned that the next morning you might be cursing the owner Murray. We stayed with the standard spicy poor boy and ordered from the owner Murray himself.
Part of the charm of this restaurant is actually getting to know Murray. He is a very interesting guy and apparently is there from open to close. He will gladly strike up a conversation and tell you anything you want to know about Poboy sandwiches, New Orleans, food, or his past careers. He is a genuinely friendly person that adds a unique charm to this restaurant.
Our Soft Shell Crab Poboy came wrapped in white butcher paper and we proceeded to spice it up a little bit with some Crystals hot sauce and a little salt and pepper. When I took my first bite I was in heaven. It was an absolutely delectable soft-shell crab poor boy sandwich. The trophy wife and I quickly scarfed down the sandwich and discussed whether or not we should get another one. Once we find good food it’s hard to let it go so we ordered one more. Wife decided that since we were in New Orleans it was important to try some authentic homemade Boudin so we ordered one of those as well. The Boudin was fresh and hot and we quickly ate it while waiting for our second sandwich. I could have eaten 2 more they were so good. Kudos to Murray.
Everyone should go to New Orleans at least once in their life. There is so much to see, do, and eat there. Inevitably when you find yourself on Bourbon Street trying to decide what you want to drink and which band you want to listen to, you will stumble across NOLA Poboys sandwich shop and convenience store. Do not pass up the opportunity to have one of the best poboys. It is an experience you will not forget. I am trying to figure out when Tastes Like Travel can go to New Orleans again. My mouth is watering thinking about that Poboy.
