Internet photos can only show so much, as we found out after booking Lotsa Dunes, a vacation condo with Meyers Real Estate Rental in Gulf Shores, AL.
Gathering the tribe is a yearly event, and this year the responsibility for booking the site fell to us. After an almost scam on Vacation Rental by Owner by hackers, we looked for local realtors to work with. We contacted Meyer Realty and settled on Lotsa Dunes, one of four condos on the coast in Ft. Morgan and looked forward to a fun family week.
Upon arrival, we realized that there was no Internet or wi-fi available in any form. This was not noted on the site. Ok, we’ll live. However, things got worse when the first family member had to use the restroom and the complimentary first roll of toilet paper was non-existent. Imagine texting your parent to come rescue you! There were no hand towels, and the bath towels and other linens were low quality. Beds were lumpy and not maintained. Outside lights had burned out bulbs, and we had to contact Meyer Realty to replace them. There weren’t even any food staples that one would expect in a property of this cost. And the employee who checked on us just as we arrived never left her vehicle.
Then the first night, while enjoying adult beverages, a cotton mouth was noticed in the dunes right next to the boardwalk leading to the pool and beach. Not that local wildlife is something that can be controlled, but at least list on the frig the local agency that could
come remove it. Later that week the he-men of the group had to kill the baby brother of the one seen the first night, not what one expects to do on vacation. After a proper funeral, we woke the next day to find a fox had un-buried it overnight. Needless to say, we were on our guard all week.
Other issues made the week less than stellar. Access to the property was either through a ferry from Dauphin Island that could take
hours, or a bumper to bumper drive through Gulf Shores from I-10. A power outage related to poor wiring to the street put us without lights or a/c twice, once for an hour and again for almost two hours.
Thank goodness Lotsa Dunes is located on a beautiful stretch of Alabama coast with white sand, blue and emerald water, dolphins, sea birds, and picturesque houses dotting the shore. The scenery helped wash away the worries of the rental.
