On a recent trip to San Mateo California I needed a hotel for one night. I looked online and found the Stone Villa Inn. The images looked good and the price ($47.99 plus taxes) was very reasonable. I instructed my travel agent to book it. Centrally located in San Mateo, the Stone Villa Inn appeared average from the street but acceptable. I entered the lobby and the Manager/Owner checked me in. The manager of the Stone Villa Inn told me he upgraded me to a double from a queen (not normally an upgrade in my opinion) and that he would not charge me the difference. I commented that I was alone and really wanted a queen bed. He then berated me and my travel agent for booking incorrectly. He told me his motel was full and my incorrect booking cost him money. In short he was rude, and very insulting as he checked me in. When I was done signing the paperwork he simply turned around and walked off as though he had something better to do. Not a good first impression at the Stone Villa Inn in San Mateo.
Upon entering the room it was average but it was clean and spacious. There were no instructions on connecting to the internet so I called the front desk. In his broken English, the manager instructed me how to connect. I could not understand him because he talked fast so I asked him to repeat the instructions. He again (in a very rude manner) told me to listen to him and gave me the instructions again. I was appalled by the rudeness for a second time. This could have all been averted with written instructions in the room, but those did not exist.
The room is equipped with a microwave, mini refrigerator, and was tolerable. The beds were harder than I prefer but the sheets were clean. I could hear noises from all adjoining rooms including snoring but it was not intolerable. The Hotel is centrally located in San Mateo and Highway 101. There was cable with plenty of channels, and free breakfast. For $50.00 it is a good value, but I could not get over how I was treated. I am pretty easy going but when I get treated rudely in 2 out of the 3 conversations I have with the management I get a bad taste in my mouth.
This hotel is a good value for the price but the attitude needs lots of improvement.
